Novel Fibers in Canada: Regulatory Developments

Canada’s rigorous definitions of “food” and “drug” have created a regulatory barrier to the introduction of new ingredients and products, especially “functional” foods. Many novel fibers (i.e., foods not traditionally for human consumption, foods with chemically modified fiber properties, or fiber concentrated from plant sources) have not received regulatory approval. However, after scientific study and a long application process, a novel fiber from pea hull was recently approved, as was a type of inulin.
